To be ready for next presentation i have read the Lottery by Shirley Jackson,
It was very different and impressive.
It was different because author created very peaceful atmosphere until we learn the real definition of the lottery. Everybody was exitement and waiting like there will be a happy event.
I was reading the story like "Hmm, who is going to win the fridge or the car, lets see..." while i was listening a happy music to increase my motivation :)
And then, i realised that the lottery is not that kind of lottery.
Two things in the story was very impressive, first was Mrs. Hutchinson's situation, second was children's...
Mrs. Hutchinson was describing one of "evil" parts of human beings.
When something is not directly related with us, we don't care it.
And childrens were representing that society imposes us this things as they are normal since we are child.
Like in the story, childrens are very happy about the situation and they are collecting stones and electing some of them because they are not suitable for throw. Because they didn't know what is wrong or what is true, just acting like the society which encircle them...
What a great post! I really liked your interpretations of Mrs. Hutchinson and the children.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite a disturbing story...people accept traditions that can end up killing them, and they don't protest until the last minute..
Short stories includes lots of symbols and they are very open to interpretations.
ReplyDeleteI don't know maybe it is because they are short?
Do author feel like i have to say lots of thing but i have bounded words so i can put lots of meaning to one word/chracter/item ? :)
