9. A list of what i learnt from ENG 101 with Sonja,

Before i start, i want to say something.

ENG 101 is my favorite lesson at this semester.

I really like English, but unfortunately ,thanks (!) to our education system, in my school, English was not an important lesson because there is no english question in Ö.S.S.- university entrance exam.
So i am very happy. And this English lessons are not based on memorizing something.
It is also about daily life. It is improved my cultural knowledge.

And it is indusputable that, i can feel strongly that Sonja is caring about ENG 101. When i feel that, my motivation reaching the peak.

So here is my list:

1)I get used to read long stories which lasted 10-20 pages.
2)I learnt literary terms like anti-hero,omniscient narration, dynamic character etc.
3)I get used to read serious articles about society's issues, in English.
(and i thought more deeply on photojournalism and reality shows)
4)I learnt "citation" and how to write academic articles in APA format.
5)I learnt how i must plan my article before writing it.
6)I learnt how to BLOG properly and continiously.( it is important step for me because it was one of my ambitions , and thanks to this blog i created my personal blog in Turkish. I realised it is a habit. And i gained it with my ENG 101 blog.)
7)I learnt how to use Creative Commons and learned a new adress for finding photos: Flickr.
8)I learnt how to find academic articles with Google Scholar. And how to find them in Sabanci's information center.

So thank you Sonja. I am lucky because i am in class C3 ^^

  3. I definitely don't understand why students are always undermining and sneering the ÖSS. If this exam did not exist, students would be graduated from schools without knowing something. ÖSS is the only factor that makes students study and through it we "really" learn our lessons, otherwise we would not do anything in the 3-hours exam if we havent learnt our lessons beforehand.

About the boring English lessons: Of course there are always boring lessons(general) in our education lives. However:

To take the control of something,
You should first take the first step. For example, in English you should first learn the grammar and learn (probably by heart but I dont think voc learning is always through by-heart-learning) And then you will be able to read the long texts. In everything, the first processes are boring and a little tiring. It is like doing sports. First you die, then you can do it with more entartainment:) And at your age, it is time to use your English, you have left behind the part of grammar or voc etc..

By the way, Sonja have you read my post about ENG101? You probably haven't left any comments on it so I cannot make sure if you know it exists ?!:D

  4. Dear Can,

Thank you, for your detailed comment, it really helped me to think more seriously.

I totally agree with you on the truth which you highlighted: There must be exams for testing children's abilities and efforts.

But in my opinion, this exam must not include only the questions with 5 choices and totally based on the "pure" knowledge without commenting. There must be questions for writing, for testing student's intellectual skills, etc. too. Thus, we can learn more deeply about life in our schools and in other courses.

And about english lessons in highschool which you mentioned that first there must be source and then lessons will be more enjoyable.

Yes, that sounds logical but i still think highschool english lessons must be more detailed and must be not present to students like an ordinary lesson which not take place in ÖSS, just you must be work on exam questions (they gave answers one or two weeks before the exam for memorizing without learning) for just to take good grades in government's highschools. Because english , more generally a foreign language, is very important for individuals and "learning foreign language" ability is unfortunately forming very hard in older ages.

And every student must have right to learn english properly. Because there is lessons in highschools called english and it mustn't be empty hour for solving 30-40 extra questions for ÖSS.
